In over 32 years of service, including a mayoral term, Former Trustee Mike Naughton shepherded us through everything from computerizing water bills back in the day, to major infrastructure initiatives. His expert municipal and legal guidance will be vital at this pivotal time in our town's growth. Mike is intimately familiar with both the myriad of governmental bodies involved "behind the scenes" with virtually every step forward the village undertakes, and the legal requirements and jurisdictions of each that must be carefully attended for a successful conclusion. With the looming Joliet boundary agreement expiration in 2026 and the ongoing battle with Northpoint, Mike felt he should return for one more term, bringing to bear his 32 years in the "school of hard knocks" as Manhattan seeks to navigate these treacherous waters.
Mike and his wife Linda have been longtime residents of the Village of Manhattan. Mike previously served as Mayor from 1989 to 1993 and was then elected to Village Trustee in 1995 serving until 2023, when he elected not to run for personal reasons. As Mayor, Naughton improved technology in the Village offices and updated Village ordinances. He has been a steady voice for the history of the village. He previously led economic development efforts as a trustee and has served in numerous capacities outside of municipal government. He also has practiced law in Manhattan for over 30 years.
"On behalf of the residents of Manhattan I want to thank both Erin [McDonough, Former Trustee] and Mike for their service to our community," said Mayor Adrieansen at the April 20, 2023 village meeting. "There are often lots of sacrifices that local elected officials make in service to their neighbors. Both of these trustees have been great partners as we work to address the challenges of our community."
Accepting the honor, Mike said, "I want to thank my wife, my family, and the Village for supporting me throughout all these years. I have enjoyed my many years working on behalf of Manhattan residents and just doing my job for our community."
